Pig Farming in Kenya

Pig farming is rising in Kenya due to the demand for pork products. It is a profitable sector, provides employment opportunities, and contributes to food security. However, you must choose the right pig breed and a suitable location to succeed in this business. 

Each breed has its own unique characteristics. Each has a particular production system and market. Therefore, as you settle for the breed remember to factor in the market of your pig products because consumers can be choosy.  The main breeds of pigs in Kenya include:

  1. 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲- Fast growing, has lean meat, and is hardy.
  2. 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲- Productive has a long body and is perfect for breeding and meat production.
  3. 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲- It is a hardy pig well-known for producing high-quality, marbled meat.
  4. 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗰- It has lean meat with minimal fat, perfect for intensive farming.

Some of the best regions to rear pigs are Nairobi, Central, Western, Nyanza, Rift Valley, and Eastern parts of the country.  The large number of pig farmers in Kenya is small scale constituting 70%.

Pigs require a dry area, draught-free, and warm because they easily get cold. It should be well ventilated, and have enough space to make distinct areas for dunging, exploring, and sleeping.
